case and sometimes it is different after you make them.

“It was 100 per cent an interesting experience [for him]. I spoke to him and 99 per cent of football things there were absolutely fine.

“He thought it is better for him and the family to come back to Europe and now he is at Ajax Amsterdam, a sensational club in a difficult moment. I am very happy for him and will definitely talk to him in these few days.”

Asked whether he would advise English players not to move to Saudi Arabia, Henderson replied: “No, definitely not.

“Everyone is different. You look at big players who are loving every second of it. You get others that don’t settle and things change quickly, things happen in your personal life, everyone is different.

“But I wouldn’t speak badly of the leagues or clubs. Full respect for the opportunity I was given. Unfortunately it didn’t work out, that’s just the way it is.

“I learnt a lot out there, I haven’t got a bad word to say about anyone out there. Just the whole experience, I learnt a lot in different ways. A different culture and league, living in a different country with my family. It was a totally different experience.

“There were some great things along those six months, some not so great, but that’s life. You learn from your experiences and move forward.

“I think a lot of people would like me to criticise the Saudi league, but that wasn’t the case and something I’m not going to do.

“If anyone feels I’ve upset them then I apologise – that was never my intention and now I want to look forward.

“I said six months ago that if I offended anyone or if people felt I let them down, I apologise. My beliefs have never changed, I’ve not changed and I can only apologise if people do feel let down.”

Henderson has not yet earned a penny from his short time in Saudi Arabia having deferred salary payments, Telegraph Sport disclosed. Sources close to the player believe he may never be paid for the six months he spent there, but Henderson said his move to Ajax was not motivated by a desire to maintain his UK tax status.

“It had nothing to do with anything other than football,” he said.
