Campervan destroyed within minutes as blaze engulfs vehicle on road

- ALASDAIR CLARK

Acampervan that burst into flames on the A92 in Fife on Saturday afternoon was destroyed in the blaze.

Bystanders say acrid smoke filled the air as the vehicle burned and firefighters tried to bring the blaze under control.

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service said one appliance had been sent to the incident near Luthrie shortly before 1pm on Saturday.

One motorist, who was behind the campervan as it travelled north towards Dundee, said it took “no time at all” for it to be destroyed once the blaze took hold.

“As I got closer to the campervan I could see smoke coming out of the windows of the house part.

“I could see the flames so I pulled in, and it just went up in no time at all. There was a lot of thick black smoke covering the road because of the wind.

“As the fire continued we also heard explosions, with what I think were gas canisters shooting out the side of the van.

“There was still people determined to drive past it, but the family from the house closest to where it happened came out and started to stop people because of the gas canisters.

“It burned down so much in the time I was there, I’d say around 15 minutes. It had just collapsed in on itself.”

Another witness, who arrived after the flames had been extinguished, told The Courier that firefighters were using breathing apparatus as they poured water on to the vehicle’s shell.

Pictures from the scene taken after the fire had burned itself out show only the destroyed front section and seats of the vehicle.

Police Scotland said officers attended to assist with traffic management.
