Gill content with decision to stay at East End Park

- By Iain Collin

Cammy Gill has revealed he was in “two minds” about leaving Dunfermline in the summer – but admits making his first-team breakthrough vindicates his decision to stay.

The highly-rated keeper has played the last three games for the Pars after being preferred to Ryan Scully by manager Stevie Crawford since last month’s 1-0 defeat to Arbroath.

The 21-year-old, who has previously been linked with interest from Celtic and Hearts, had been desperate for a chance to show what he can do but had previously played only four times for the Fifers.

After finally making his league debut in the final game of last season in May, the youngster was offered a two-year deal and confesses he is glad he opted to stay after Crawford promised he would get the chance of top-team starts.

He said: “I was definitely in two minds. I obviously wanted to be at Dunfermline, first and foremost, but at the age I am at as well, it is about getting that step into the first-team and getting men’s football.

“At the time I wasn’t really getting that. I had played one (league) game, which was the last game of last season.

“It was a career choice, I feel personally that I am at that age where I need to start playing. It was a call where I needed to think of the best scenario for myself.

“Now, I can say that it is 100% worth it. The manager has stuck by what he said and I am very happy for that.

“The Championship is a really good level for me to be playing at. To be playing at a club like Dunfermline, at the age of 21, if you had told me that when I first signed I would have bitten your hand off.

“But I am just taking it game by game. We will see where that goes but it is just about trying to keep my place at the moment and that is not going to be an easy job.”

Last weekend’s 3-0 win over Partick Thistle was Gill’s first clean sheet since making his debut as a second-half substitute in the Challenge Cup win over Buckie Thistle two years ago.

It was also Dunfermline’s first shutout in the Championship this season and Gill is hopeful they can use their maiden league victory to kick-start their campaign as they prepare to host Alloa this afternoon.

He added: “Looking at the next couple of fixtures we want to go on a run.

“They are winnable games that we have got coming up and if we perform like we did on Saturday then there is no reason why we can’t go on a wee run.

“The clean sheet was on my to-do list, to get the first one and the monkey off the back for me, personally.

“That is also the first clean sheet that we have had in the league this season, which is massive.

“Hopefully we can take that into the next couple of games and use that as an advantage.”
