Championship leaders Dundee United face another test of character when Morton visit

TANNADICE: McCulloch expects Morton to provide similar challenge to Lichties

Dundee United will need to be on their game if they are to beat Morton, admits coach Lee McCulloch.

The Tangerines welcome the Greenock men to Tannadice tomorrow on the back of Saturday’s last-gasp comeback win over Arbroath.

McCulloch knows they will have to play better than they did for 88 minutes against the Lichties before striker Lawrence Shankland rode to the rescue to turn 0-1 into 2-1 within the blink of an eye.

The assistant head coach said: “We will take the positives out of what happened but it was possibly an under-par performance from us.

“Arbroath will make it hard for any team this season and I think they will do well this year. I just thought we showed great character to come back from 1-0 down in the 88th minute.

“To get that equaliser but then go on and get the winner shows that we have built character in the team this season compared to previous years.

“We maybe still had a wee bit of a hangover from that Ayr game and it was a mental challenge for the players. It was pleasing that they dug in.

“So it’s pleasing to get three points but we will have to be on our game on Saturday against Morton.

“They have some good players and a fantastic manager in David Hopkin who knows how to win with little resources.

“I think this might be similar to last Saturday’s match in that Hoppy will have a game plan to sit in and maybe hit us on the counter-attack.

“We will have to just wait and see but I think it’s important that we look to ourselves and how we will play rather than focus too much on the opposition.”
