Star-struck Robbie settling in and hoping for more action

-

New Glasgow hero Robbie Nairn has revealed he only switched to rugby from athletics because he was fed up training on his own.

The speedy utility back has made a huge impression for the Warriors while the big stars have been absent on Scotland duty.

As he prepared for tomorrow’s crucial Pro14 clash with the Cheetahs at Scotstoun, he lifted the lid on his sporting conversion.

Nairn declared: “I didn’t become involved in rugby until I was in my mid-teens.

“I had been a successful sprinter before being persuaded by a pal to go along to the Currie club.

“The team training made me realise I had not really enjoyed working solo and felt lonely – and it wasn’t long before I was starting to think of rugby as a career.”

Now coming to the end of his first season as a pro with the Warriors, Nairn added: “At first I was pretty star-struck at having the likes of Stuart Hogg around.

“Then you realise these big names are only human and that you can ask these guys for advice and learn from them.

“More than that, it has been my responsibility to do that.

“One thing I brought with me from the athletics track was that if things don’t go well, there is no one to blame but yourself.

“I have had the pace and athleticism – and what I am focusing on now are the pure rugby skills,” he added.

Nairn went on: “It has been fantastic to pick up some gametime, but I feel I have a lot more to give and to show the fans.

“I hope to get the chance over the next few weeks to do just that.”
