Lessons learned in Edinburgh victory

BENNETON TREVISO 13 EDINBURGH 24

Richard Cockerill was relieved that his roller-coaster side are finally learning how to win.

At the end of a turbulent week, no triumph has ever been more welcome in the capital camp. And Cockerill wants them to use the success in Italy as a springboard to solidity in the Pro14.

He said: “The guys are starting to understand what it takes to win.

“The lessons are being learned. “It was important for us that we proved we can win away against a side that we lost to at home.

“We are getting there –and gaining the confidence we need in the team.

“Even when we were under pressure we kept to our game plan, ball in hand, and we were a threat the whole match.”

Cockerill added: “It shows that we do have an environment that is working. We have good coaches, good people and good players. We have to keep getting that belief.

“Days like this when you get that result are so crucial.”

Treviso had threatened to snatch their second league win against the capital side in the space of a few weeks until Dougie Fife completed a vital try double.

And the winger couldn’t have picked a better time to show off his speed and finishing power.

Fife was a surprise pick in Scotland boss Gregor Townsend’s squad for the autumn Test series.

Now he could be pitched into battle against the tough guys of Samoa in the opening encounter a week on Saturday.

Sam Hidalgo-Clyne snapped up the other touchdown, while man-of-the-match Jason Tovey kicked the rest of the points.
