Historian resumes walking tour of Scotland’s ancient capital

-

Journalist and author Norman Watson will resume his walks into history on Sunday as he begins his summer programme of heritage walking tours of Perth.

The guided tours will take place each Sunday until October 8 and will tell tales of witches and plague victims and the growth of the city through its history.

Norman, who is DC Thomson’s company historian, said: “We go south to the South Inch and north to the North Inch as we explore the history and heritage of the ancient capital of Scotland.

“Last year’s tours were enjoyed by visitors from across the world and by many who lived, worked or just spent time in Perth.”

Norman hopes the tours will provide a memorable experience, with participants introduced to Perth’s rich and diverse history through the streets, buildings, shopfronts, sculpture, parks and places deeply woven into the lives of its people.

He said: “As this ancient city’s journey through the ages unfolds, they will see a building in continuous use for almost 1,000 years, the green where witches were burned and plague victims buried and the Perth landmark used as a template for the British Museum.

“They will see the ‘A9’ north, as it used to be, the final flicker of gas lighting and the last traces of the trams.”

The walks last around two hours and start from the River Tay viewing platform at the foot of Perth’s High Street.

Each begins at 2.30pm, with places priced at £6 for adults and £2 for children.
