Woman hid drugs behind dentures in a bid to fool prison staff

-

A woman hid drugs behind her false teeth in an effort to take them into Perth Prison.

Kimberly Fraser was caught with cannabis and heroin but managed to swallow a third wrap before its contents could be identified.

The 35-year-old’s solicitor said she had merely forgotten she was carrying the illicit substances, a claim rubbished by a sheriff.

Perth Sheriff Court heard that officials were alerted to Fraser’s concealments – which had a prison value of almost £600 – by a sniffer dog.

Depute fiscal Carol Whyte said: “At around 6.55pm one of the prison’s drug detection dogs was on duty with its handler when it indicated that the accused may be in possession of drugs.

“She was taken to a private room and a search was carried out. She was found to have 4.9g of cannabis, which has a street value of £12 but a prison value of £60, and 1.1g of diamorphine with a street value of £100 but a prison value of £500.

“During the search it appeared that the accused was concealing an item between her lower false teeth and her jaw.

“After much persuasion she removed the false teeth but then put her head down. A gurgling sound could be heard coming from her throat, as if items were stuck there. As the search was completed the accused began to be sick.”

Solicitor Emma Farmer, defending, said: “Ms Fraser’s partner was serving a sentence at the time.

“She had slipped back into use and was concealing drugs on her body for fear of having them stolen. She forgot about them while visiting him in prison.

“When challenged she panicked and tried to conceal them. She accepts full responsibility.”

Fraser, of Alison Street, Kirkcaldy, admitted being in possession of cannabis and heroin at Perth Prison on October 19 last year.

She further admitted obstructing police officers by swallowing a wrap containing illicit substances at the same place on the same date.

Sentence was deferred.
