Strathie pip Glens as Fifers end season with three straight losses

-

Strathmore ended their RBS Caledonia Division One campaign on a high when they pipped Glenrothes 25-24 at Carleton Park.

The hosts started well, with Rhys Bryce touching down early in the game, but they trailed 18-5 at half time after Darren Smith and Fraser Cameron bagged a try apiece and Fraser McKay was on target with a conversion and two penalties as Strathie punished the home side for a loss of discipline.

The Fifers outscored their visitors in the second period, with Chris Docherty, Shaun Gray and Michael Delorey all crossing the whitewash, while Kurt Strachan booted two conversions. However, that was not enough to snatch the win, with Mike Black claiming try number three for the Inchmacoble men and McKay adding the extra two points.

The result had no impact on the final placings in the league table, with Strathmore having already secured fifth spot and Glenrothes assured of third place despite ending the league programme with a run of three defeats.

John Goodall, spokesman for the Carleton Park side, said: “While third place in the league is an improvement on last season this has been a disappointing end to the campaign.”

Compounding that disappointment was a loss for the Glenrothes Development side, who went down 38-7 at home to Dundee University Medics in Division Three (Midlands).

The students are safe in third spot with one match still to play, while Glenrothes could yet secure a top six finish should they end the season on a positive note while results elsewhere go in their favour.

One team that still has a lot of rugby to play are Grangemouth Stags seconds, who have three matches left before they can break for the summer. The Glensburgh side travelled to meet basement outfit Bo’ness and chalked up a 45-13 success.
