Spieth’s late arrival not likely to halt challenge

- Eve Muirhead

The third leg of the season grand slam is still on for Jordan Spieth. I’m sure he’ll be delighted at his opening round of five under to sit nicely tucked behind the leaders.

When he started to struggle a wee bit on the back nine (if you can call dropping back from six under to four under a struggle) I’m sure a lot of people were thinking he was running out of gas.

But he got his birdie down the last and I still think he’s in great shape to win.

I’m not one of those who thinks he has made a mistake by not flying over here earlier.

When it comes to competition preparation there is no right or wrong. It comes down to what’s right for you.

It’s not always a case of the earlier the better.

We compete a lot in Canada and we’ve tried it both ways.

And we’ve come to the conclusion that, for us, it’s better not to fly over too early.

The length of time Spieth has been here is more than enough to get over jet-lag.

You can go stale and there’s only so much practice that will help you.

Spieth played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and that is plenty of preparation time.

As long as he keeps hitting fairways and greens and holing putts, that’s all that matters.

Who knows, maybe he’ll slip back today, but I doubt it.
