Green threatens to hang up his gloves

-

GLENROTHES BOXER Stuart Green could hang up his gloves if he is denied a crack at C o m m o n we a l t h title holder Willie Limond, Courier Sport understands.

The 2 9 - y e a r - o l d, who currently holds the Scottish light-welterweight crown, has set his sights on a potentially lucrative title bout with Limond after retaining his belt against Mitch Prince in Glasgow in January.

Green was said to be we l l ahead on points when the fight was stopped due to Prince suffering a deep cut above his eye, and the match-up was eventually declared a draw.

Now Green wants a C o m m o n we a l t h title showdown with Limond — and Courier Sport can reveal trainer Stevie McGuire Sr is prepared to hand top promoter Tommy Gilmour a major ultimatum.

“We wa n t a shot at Limond and if not then Stuart’s going to retire,” McGuire Sr confirmed.

“Everyone that Tommy has put in front of Stuart, unbeaten f ighters you name it, Stuart has always managed to beat and we feel he deserves a fight for the Commonwealth title.

“So the only thing we can do is give Tommy this ultimatum.”

However, McGuire Sr hopes promoter Gilmour — who manages Green and Limond — will see sense.

“I think Limond’s next fight will be his last and people have been talking about Hamilton giving Limond a big pay day,” he continued.

“I’m saying to Tommy: ‘Why lose the Commonwealth title to anybody else if Stuart is ready and willing to fight?’

“Stuart’s in the same stable as Limond and if Limond beats Stuart, then the Hamilton fight is still there.”
