Max focus on Flyers’ chances

-

Fife Flyers head to Nottingham Panthers tonight looking for valuable points on the road as they continue their quest for an Elite League play-off spot.

The dust has settled after the weekend skirmishes and Fife remain in second bottom position with 41 points from 46 outings.

The men from the Lace City have, however, been boosted by their 6-5 overtime win at Glasgow on Sunday.

Fife head coach Tom Coolen’s entire focus was the tussle with Coventry on Saturday in what was their only game of the weekend.

However, the squad face a long bus trip south and Coolen hopes that his men show the same energy they exhibited against Blaze.

They also showed grit to battle back from losing an early goal and Fife’s powerplay worked well.

Flyers centre Max Humitz scored two powerplay goals – and felt the crucial win was a team effort.

The American – voted man of the match – praised the club’s No 1 goaltender Shane Owen.

Humitz said: “He (Shane) held us together and we rely on him back there to make timely saves.

“He has come up huge for us all year and we would not be in the spot we are in, fighting for a play-off place, without Shane being back on the team.”

On his powerplay goals, Humitz said: “We play light and loose and we’re having fun on the powerplay.

“We have a man advantage so we might as well take advantage.

“(Johan) Eriksson is a great passer and (Lucas) Chiodo has great vision so it is fun playing with those guys.

“Teemo (Pulkkinnen) is on the face-off and we have (Sean) Giles. It is a five-man unit and we play really well and we have gelled in the past two months.”

Fife head to high-flying Cardiff Devils on Saturday in their only game of the weekend before a break to prepare for the visit of Belfast Giants on Sunday, March 24.
