Don’t blame boxers for ‘fight of the century’ not living up to the hype. Breaking the Ice

-

Is winning everything? There are plenty of people who don’t think so – and most of them paid £20 and stayed up to 6 o’clock in the morning to watch the Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao fight! You can understand why it left most viewers underwhelmed.

It was a long build-up to the fight and it was being talked about as one of the biggest ever.

‘The fight of the century’ I think the promoters were calling it.

When you make that sort of hype, and the contest doesn’t live up to it, it’s pretty predictable that there will be some sort of backlash.

You can’t blame Floyd Mayweather though.

He never said he would go toe-to-toe and make it an all-time classic.

He just said he would win. And that’s exactly what he did.

Maywather says that he’s only got one fight left before he retires, so he’s not about to change his style now. He isn’t stupid. He’ll know that the way he fights will leave a lot of people cold and when it comes to his legacy, despite his claims, he won’t be remembered as the best of the best.

But, going by his nickname, money is what matters most to him.

And he’s certainly got plenty of that to throw around.

I don’t think he should feel obliged to try to fight differently.

His skills are in defence, so he has to be true to that otherwise he would run the risk of losing.

It’s for other people to decide where he ranks in the all-time greats. All he can do is win.

It’s the same with Jose Mourinho and Chelsea.

They’ve had to put up with the “boring, boring Chelsea” accusation, but that just sounds like sour grapes from the likes of Arsene Wenger to me. I bet it’s the type of boredom the Arsenal fans wouldn’t mind.

Mourinho’s obligation and his players’ obligation is to win football matches, and that’s all.

We’re fortunate that in curling, we’re known for the aggressive, attacking game we call.

But if you were to tell me I’d win an Olympic gold with a defensive game, I’d take that right now.

The World Championships just past were a really valuable learning exercise in that regard.

We weren’t playing at our best and I should probably have been a bit cagier with our tactics.

It’s brilliant when you can win and please everybody with how you do it.

But ask any athlete and the “W” as Tiger Woods calls it, will always come first.

Buckingham Palace beckons I certainly won’t be winning the pro-am at Wentworth in a couple of weeks unless I can get the clubs out to practise sometime soon!

It’s been hectic since the curling season finished.

The summers just seem to get busier and busier.

There have been dinners and talks, and I’ve been doing some work this week to help support Race for Life.

Next week we’ve got a big day. We’re off to Buckingham Palace for a garden party.

We’re taking all our mums down to London for a few days, and I think there will be quite a few Winter Olympians there. It’s been a while since Sochi so it will be good to catch up with them.

I’m told the Queen will be mingling among us so I’ll let you know next week if she was keen to have a blether about curling!

If you were to tell me I’d win an Olympic gold with a defensive game, I’d take that right now
