Stars denied by sudden death penalty shootout

-

JAKE MORRISETTE of the Cardiff Devils found the net last night in a nervetingling sudden death penalty shootout to deny brave Dundee CCS Stars.

The 30-year-old from British Columbia slotted home after Dundee’s top points gatherer Nico Sacchetti missed in the fourth round.

Dundee gain a point for fighting back from 4-1 down after 26 minutes, their early strike coming from Jerry Pollastrone five seconds from the end of the first period to haul the score back to 2-1. The 27-year-old completed his treble with goals after 30 and 57 minutes, his third tying the game at 4-4.

Dundee’s other goal came from US- bor n Sachetti, who missed with two penalty shots. Brock McPherson also missed and Billy Bagron was Dundee’s only scorer.

Morrisette, who has also played in Germany and Denmark, missed in the first round of penalty shots but kept his nerve to make it 5-4, take the two points and a welcome win for the Welsh side.

Bobby Chaumont claimed a glory treble last night to fire Fife Flyers to their second confidenceboosting win in 24 hours.

The Canadian marksman, cut by Braehead Clan early last season, sparked a remarkable combeback for the side who have propped up the 10-strong table in recent weeks but burned Coventry Blaze in the SkyDome.

The 29-year-old from Sudbury, Ontario, who was Fife’s Man of the Match, burst into the action when Fife looked to be skidding to defeat at 3-1 down.

His strike with less than five minutes left of the middle period sparked the Kirkcaldy club.

Coventry centre Ryan Ginand did make it 4-2 seconds later but Fife kept on coming.

They fired five straight goals to take the points, with a shock 7-4 over sixthplaced Coventry victory.

And it could have been worse for Coventry if Derek Roehl had not failed with a penalty shot early in the second period.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Panthers forward David Clarke has been assessed a five-plus game misconduct for boarding following a supplementary discipline request by Braehead Clan.

The Glasgow club requested the review after an incident in the second period of the match between the two sides at Braehead on Friday.

A 25-minute penalty will now be added to his playing record.

On Saturday Fife Flyers edged Hull Stingrays 4-3 at Kirkcaldy after penalty shots.

Tim Hartung was the hero, keeping his cool in a marathon penalty shootout as Fife snapped a five-game losing streak.

Fife has parted company with Slovenian marksman Rok Pajic by mutual consent. The 28-year-old former World Championship player only scored five goals and assisted in four others in 15 games.

And his wife, who was not with him, is suffering health problems.
