Ryder Cup boost for students

A S WELL as providing a massive boost to Scotland’s tourism industry next year, the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles will leave a lasting legacy to the hospitality industry.

Students at Perth College UHI, Stirling University and Queen Margaret University will benefit from a five-year bursary investment deal from Ryder Cup Europe.

The investment means the 12 students are the first in the world to receive financial support linked to a Ryder Cup. Each of the chosen students will receive £1,000 per year for the next five years and is studying tourism, hospitality and management courses.

The bursaries will help the students pay for their travel and accommodation costs and ensure they can access courses relevant to the 2014 Ryder Cup.

A llana McVicar, an 18-year-old student from Perth who is studying hospitality management at Perth College UHI, was one of the 12 students chosen to receive the bursary.

“To be one of the first students in the world to benefit from the Ryder Cup in this way feels great, and I am very grateful for the financial help, which will be put to good use to help me with my studies,” she said.

Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup director, said: “The 2014 Ryder Cup will bring major benefits to the local and Scottish economy and we want to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.”

Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, added: “The Ryder Cup is more than just golf, and good hospitality and management can help make the event truly great.

“This investment places young people at the heart of our legacy commitment and will give young people new skills in their chosen career path and the best training to go on to work, whether it is in the hospitality and event management industry, or as the next generation of industry leaders.”
