British tourist shot dead in Thailand

-

A BRITISH tourist has been shot dead at a New Year’s Eve party in Thailand after getting caught in the crossfire of a gun fight between local gangs.

Stephen Ashton (22) is said to have been killed as he danced with friends at a beach bar on the island of Koh Phangan.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in Thailand on New Year’s Eve and we are providing consular assistance to the family.”

Police Colonel Kittakarn Kramomthong said Mr Ashton was with a group of friends and 300 other tourists at the 2013 countdown party when he was shot shortly after 4am.

Neighbour Dawn Mason (48) described Mr Ashton as a “very normal, likeable young man.”

“If Stephen or his sister Emily had parties, they’d always be at the house with their parents so they knew where they were.

“I went to the house today and the family just seem in complete shock.”

Mr Ashton’s mother, Diane, is flying back to the UK from a skiing trip following news of her son’s death, Ms Mason said.

Mr Ashton’s family said they were too distraught to speak at their home last night.

The tropical island of Koh Phangan, situated north of tourist haven Ko Samui, is a popular destination for backpackers and gap year students.

One of the attractions of the island is its monthly full moon party at Haad Rin Beach, and many people know it as the setting for Alex Garland’s novel The Beach, which was made into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

A tourist website for the island says: “Ko Phangan also has tranquil places for visitors to enjoy.

“You can relax under shade of coconut trees by white sand beaches and absorb the spirit of nature.

“Come and enjoy the party and nature together. You’ll be surprised that they can come together as naturally as the body and soul.”
