Summer saxophone shows

-

SO LONG associated with smoky jazz clubs, the blues and classical music, the humble saxophone will be the focus of a major event being held in St Andrews this summer.

More than 1,000 musicians from across the globe will take over the Fife town for the World Saxophone Congress from July 10 to 15, giving people the chance to hear some of the world’s leading players.

Last held in Britain more than 30 years ago, theworld Saxophone Congress is one of the most important events in the classical music industry’s calendar and this year coincides with St Andrews University’s 600th anniversary celebrations.

Held every three years, the festival sees a series of soloist, chamber ensemble, big band and symphony orchestra concerts held, while also providing an opportunity to see innovations in instrument-making and equipment, music production and distribution.

A series of evening gala concerts will run over the five days of the festival, which will also include over 250 recitals, lectures from professionals, master classes from virtuoso players, workshops and creative street performances.

International trade exhibitions will also take place at the Town Hall and Parliament Hall alongside a number of special events.

Twelve-year-old Matvey Sherling, a prize-winning vir tuoso saxophonist and piano player, will be among those performing a recital.
