Flames too hot for Stars as Dundee hit for seven
ICE HOCKEY: Omar Pacha’s side see home win followed by Surrey trouncing
It was a weekend of ups and downs for Dundee Stars as they put on an impressive performance on Saturday before being burnt by Guildford Flames on the road yesterday.
Stars beat the Flames 6-2 at home on Saturday for their first regulation win over the Surrey side since they joined the Elite League two years ago.
Captain Matt Marquardt led from the front by netting a double, while Kevin Dufour, Shawn Boutin, Eglis Kains and Colton Kroeker also scored for Omar Pacha’s men.
However, it was a different story in Surrey yesterday as Dundee found themselves three goals down after the first period.
Craig Gans picked up an interference penalty after 25 seconds and Ian Watters would score from the resulting two-minute powerplay.
The home side doubled their lead through Jordan Abt in the 14th minute before Jesses Craige added a third inside the closing seconds.
Stars were better at shutting down the Flames in the second period but just could not get their offence going and again lost a goal in the closing stages when Kruise Reddick found a way past Dundee netminder Alex Leclerc.
Paul Dixon’s men added to the Tayside team’s woes with three more goals in the third period.
Cam Braes netted in the 43rd minute before Ben Davies put his name on the scoresheet after 46 and Craige would net his second in the 50th minute to round off the home side’s scoring for the night.
Dundee grabbed a small consolation from the game as Craig Garrigan scored his first goal of the season with just one second left to play and deny Travis Fullerton a shutout.
Stars – who play their final two challenge Cup Group A games this weekend – moved up to fifth in the Elite League standings, three points behind leaders Glasgow Clan.
