Russell impresses on debut
Scotland star Finn Russell has become an instant hero in France.
The playmaker, who left Glasgow in the summer, produced a man-of-the-match display on his competitive debut for Racing 92.
Russell’s 20-point haul, including two tries, paved the way for a stunning 25-9 win over Toulon on their own turf.
However, cautious Racing assistant coach Laurent Labit insisted he wants even more from the ex-warrior.
Labit declared: “We saw the attacking qualities of Finn, but with him there are also some defects.
“He has a different profile from what we are used to seeing in stand-offs.
“He is certainly a lot different to our other No 10, Pat Lambie. But that is exactly why we wanted to bring him to Paris.
“We were looking for someone capable of taking a lot of initiative and doing things that no-one expects. His performance was encouraging. However there are also risks involved in his style of play, which is full of enthusiasm and is a fresh approach.
“Overall, we are happy with what he did in his first game, including his goal-kicking.”
Racing trailed 6-3 at the Stade Mayol – but then came Russell’s amazing burst.
In a frantic two-minute spell, he rattled up 12 points from two touchdowns and a conversion.
