Mills and Clark are made to wait to seal sailing gold

-

Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark’s Olympic gold is on hold after light winds led to the postponement of the women’s 470 medal race.

A fine opening series meant the British duo merely had to complete yesterday’s double-point finale without disqualification to top the podium.

However, Mills and Clark will now have to wait to add to Giles Scott’s Finn triumph and Nick Dempsey’s men’s RS:X silver after light winds delayed their coronation.

The men’s and women’s 470 medal races will now take place today, coming to a conclusion on the final day of the Rio 2016 regatta along with the 49er and 49erFX classes.

Rajiv Ouseph is out of the badminton singles competition after a quarter-final defeat to Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.

The 29-year-old from Hounslow lost 2-0 (21-12, 21-16) in the last eight tie at Riocentro.

Liam Heath and John Schofield won their semifinal in the K2 200 metres canoe sprint to progress to today’s final.

The pair were bronze medallists in the same event at London 2012 and will be hoping for the same or better in Rio.

But there was disappointment for Rachel Cawthorn as she could only finish sixth in her semi-final in the K1 500m.

Liam Phillips was 10th fastest in the BMX timetrial run yesterday which determined seedings for today’s quarter-finals.

The 27-year-old from Burnham-on-Sea, Olympic finalist in 2012 and world champion in 2013, clocked 35.095 seconds as France’s Joris Daudet qualified quickest in 34.617secs.

GB taekwondo star Jade Jones will start the defence of her Olympic title against Naima Bakkal of Morocco.

Despite a brief problem with motivation post-London, Jones has enjoyed a stellar last few years and narrowly missed out on adding the -57kg world title in Chelyabinsk last year after a computer scoring error in her semi-final.

Jones is part of a fourstrong British taekwondo squad, all of whom have realistic medal chances, with London 2012 bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad set to begin his campaign for a second consecutive podium finish in the men’s -80kg category today.

GB diver Tonia Couch finished fifth in the women’s 10 metres platform competition to qualify for today’s semifinals.
