Hunt for man after gun allegedly fired
NORTHUMBRIA Police are appealing for help to find a man in connection with a “disturbance” in Newcastle where it is suspected a gun was fired.
The force has issued an appeal naming Asif Hussain, 26, as someone they wish to speak to in relation to the incident, which is alleged to have taken place in Severus Road in Fenham at 10.30pm on Monday night.
Hussain is thought to be “actively evading” arrest, police said.
Now, the police force is urging members of the public who can help officers to track down Hussain to come forward. Extensive police searches remain ongoing, while anyone harbouring Hussain is warned they could also face prosecution.
Members of the public are asked not to approach Hussain, and instead to immediately contact Northumbria Police by calling 101 and quoting the reference number NP-202403190107.
This comes after a man in his 30s was arrested for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life on Tuesday. He has since been released on bail.
FIVE out of six gang members associated with schoolboy Gordon Gault have walked free from court for their roles in the violent confrontation during which he died.
The 14-year-old was killed during an armed clash between rival gangs in the West End of Newcastle.
Carlos Neto and Lawson Natty were jailed earlier this month for Gordon’s manslaughter and for stabbing Jack Hardy, having been cleared of murder.
Now five teenagers who were 15, 16 and 17 at the time – including Jack Hardy and Raymond Matthew – have been given either suspended sentences or referral orders, while Liam Thompson, 28, was jailed by a judge at Newcastle Crown Court.
Passing sentence, Judge Edward Bindloss said: “Some of you were not at the scene when the main fighting occurred but were there shortly before. Most of you assisted the wounded to get help.
“However, this is a joint enterprise, a pre-organised armed fight and, in law, you all share responsibility for this offence and its consequences and the consequence of the fight to which you contributed led to the death of Gordon Gault, making it very serious indeed.”
Christopher Moran, prosecuting, said the case involved two groups – known as the North Group and South Group – clashing in Elswick Park in November 2022 in violence which led to the death of Gordon Gault. He said both had “characteristics of gang affiliation” and had their own territory.
Mr Moran said: “Before November 9, individuals from both groups engaged
