Facing up to the Wolves

-

NEWCASTLE United step out at St James’ Park to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in two days’ time.

The game kicks off at 2pm and will be televised as part of Sky Sports’ Super Sunday.

The visitors sit 13th in the Premier League, only one point adrift of the Europa League spots.

After beating Manchester City before the international break, Wolves had a disappointing result last week against Southampton who are hovering above the relegation zone.

This could boost Newcastle United’s chances as they find themselves in a similar position, sitting 18th in the Premier League.

However, the Magpies must find their shooting boots if they want to win this weekend; they are the lowest scoring team in the league, along with Watford who have also scored just five goals.

Hopefully, the players can take inspiration from a result way back in November 1905 when the Magpies ran out 8-0 winners with Bill Appleyard claiming a hat-trick in-front of crowd of 15,000! But let’s hope there is no repeat of the 6-2 away defeat to Wolves in March 1992!

Back in time, these two sides first met in September 1898, when United were beaten 4-2, watched by 20,000 people at St James’ Park.

The last time the two teams played, in February this year, both sides came away with a point after a 1-1 draw at Molineux when Willy Boly equalised with a header in the 90th minute.

When Newcastle United last played Wolves at home, in December last year, the Magpies were on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat in front of a 50,223 crowd.

With the score at 1-1, the Magpies conceded another 90th minute goal, this time from Matt Docherty.

In their 2016-17 Championship campaign, United defeated Wolves at Molineux, running out 1-0 winners, thanks to an Aleksandar Mitrovic goal. But in the same season, they suffered a 2-0 defeat in front of 52,117 fans at St James’ Park.

Between the two teams, 97 games have been played in all competitions, with Newcastle United winning 32 times compared to Wolves’ 41. The clubs have shared the points 24 times.
