Apartments plan for former police station

A FORMER police station in Whitley Bay could be turned into apartments.

The two-storey building, on Laburnum Avenue, was a base for the town’s policing team for many years.

It had open plan cellular accommodat­ion, including the old custody suite and cells. There was also a kitchen and WC facilities.

But the property was sold after the police team moved to a new home two years ago.

Now Taylored Lets has taken charge of the site and plans to transform it into apartments.

The agency says it is looking to submit a planning applicatio­n to North Tyneside Council later

this year asking for permission to convert the property. If the scheme is given the go-ahead, it hopes to start work on site in mid 2019.

Meanwhile, Whitley Bay police have made their home at the nearby Park View shopping centre.

They have a groundfloo­r premises on Park Avenue with the same opening hours as they had on Laburnum Avenue – 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

At the time of the relocation, a spokesman for the policing team said: “Our new location provides an accessible base for officers to patrol Whitley Bay. Being right in the town centre it means people can call in and get advice or ask questions and speak to an officer while in the town centre.”
