Derby clash goes the way of Durham

ROUND seven of the NYDO youth competitio­n saw Tyne and Wear travel to neighbours Durham.

In the under-18s’ contest, Lewis Mayes and Charlie Abbot got Durham off to a good start with 2-0 victories before Joe Stobbart, Joe Male and Kieron Lown replied for Tyne and Wear to make the match score 3-2.

Durham’s James Thornton levelled the score, setting the scene for Tyne and Wear’s Drew Mole to step up and win the match decieder.

Joe Male (pictured below), on his debut, enjoyed an impressive 25.05 average.

The girls came up against an experience­d Durham trio, losing 3-0.

Casey Stephenson achieved a 17.58 average for the home side.

Lady of the match for Tyne and Wear was youngster Natasha Kennedy, averaging 12.68.

The under-21s’ clash started with Nick Stephenson extending Durham’s lead to 7-4.

Tyne and Wear’s man of the match Sean Lee Brown (21.78) and Peter Alen brought the score back to 7-6 - but any chance of winning the match ended as Nathan Powney and Jack Bell extended Durham’s advantage to make the final result 9-6.

On the reserve boards, there were victories for Tasha Kennedy and Xander Lown.

The next NYDO game for Tyne and Wear is at home to Humberside at Gateshead’s Teams Club on April 29.
