Robins are so chirpy after a derby success

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

NORTH Shields took the North Tyneside bragging rights with a 3-1 win against local rivals Whitley Bay.

It was a goal from former Seahorses’ star Paul Robinson which set the Robins on their way.

The midfielder found space on the edge of the hosts’ area and his shot was deflected past goalkeeper Tom Flynn.

Robins’ goalkeeper Sean McCafferty kept his side ahead as the first-half ended in eventful fashion.

McCafferty made impressive saves to deny both Chris Salmon and former Robins’ player Peter Glen Ravenhill.

The visitors broke from the second save and came within the width of a post of doubling their lead when Lewis Suddick’s shot struck the far post.

Bay were reduced to ten men in the aftermath of that effort when Graham Williams was shown a straight red card after an altercation with Ben Harmison.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Whitley stayed in the game and looked to have snatched an unlikely point in the closing stages.

McCafferty lingered too long on the ball and was challenged by Seahorses’ substitute Callum Johnston.

The loose ball ran to GlenRavenhill an dhe tapped into the empty net.

There was to be late heartbreak for the hosts when Robins’ substitute Gareth Bainbridge fired a left-footed drive past Tom Flynn in injury time and Dean Holmes secured the points with the last kick of the game.

The win moves the Robins up to fifth in the league.

FA Vase finalists Stockton Town moved back into the top eight of the Division One table with a 2-0 home victory against bottom club Billingham Synthonia.

A Nathan Mulligan penalty put them ahead in the first half and Max Craggs’ second-half free-kick secured the three points.

Seaham Red Star came out on top 3-2 at home to Jarrow Roofing.

Red Star were in control as Robbie Bird and Liam McBryde put them two goals ahead.

Dennis Knight pulled Roofing back into the game.

However, McBryde looked to have secured the points with a goal 20 minutes into the second half.

Olly Martin’s late strike gave the Roofing some hope but they were unable to find an equaliser.
