Old factory to make way for new flats
DEVELOPERS’ PLANS FOR RIVERSIDE APARTMENTS REVEALED
A FORMER rubber factory could be knocked down and replaced with new riverside apartments.
The former North Eastern Rubber Company building on Clive Street, that leads to the North Shields Fish Quay, has been empty for around 10 years and is in a poor state of repair.
Now JC Quay Ltd has put together plans to demolish the old factory and ancillary buildings there, and construct three apartment blocks with 54 homes and parking facilities.
The planning application, which has been submitted to North Tyneside Council, says the scheme would “complement the ongoing revitalisation of the Fish Quay”.
The documents say: “The overall design comprises three separate apartment blocks, providing a mix of one and two-bedroom units including a single two-bedroom townhouse.
“The three blocks will vary in height between two and five storeys and all units will benefit from river views from their principle habitable rooms.”
The proposals also include the possibility of a sculptural feature, in the shape of a ship anchor, outside the apartments.
A decision on the application is expected to be made by the summer.
The site, which lies within the Fish Quay and New Quay Conservation Areas, is near the former Porthole pub – a Grade II-listed building.
In 2005, a plan to build 45 apartments on the land was turned down by the council. It was felt the proposed apartment blocks, six storeys in height, would be too high and would affect the character of the area.
Since then, other schemes have been approved at the Fish Quay and nearby Smith’s Dock.
At the moment, a site at Bell Street is being transformed into a new development of homes and shops.
That project is expected to finish this autumn.
And hundreds of new homes are being built at Smith’s Dock. There are also plans to open up the riverside to provide a direct link between the Fish Quay and Royal Quays.
