Durham in final-over defeat as risk backfires Wilson named in England tour squad

GLAMORGAN WIN THRILLER

-

GLAMORGAN made Durham pay for a risky declaration by winning with just three balls remaining to win by three wickets in Swansea.

The thrilling finish gave the hosts their first County Championship win of the season, while the North East club remain winless.

Needing 14 to win off the last over, Nick Selman smashed Phil Coughlin for two sixes before getting the winning runs next ball.

Glamorgan were indebted to the opener, who batted throughout the innings for his 116 from 129 balls, with twelve fours and three sixes.

Durham had added a further 118 runs in the morning session, although Paul Collingwood would have probably batted on after lunch had 16 overs not been lost to rain.

The captain was undefeated on 92, and another eight runs would have seen him become the only Durham player to have twice scored centuries in the same game.

Collingwood said: “It had been a bold declaration, but in the position we are in, we had to give Glamorgan a sniff, and try and win the game.

“Had the rain not intervened after lunch where we lost 16 overs, we could have batted on and given then a bigger target, but that’s cricket, and you have to give Glamorgan credit for the way they played.

“I also had to use the spinners more, because of the indifferent light at times, but in the end it was a great game of cricket.”

He admitted it has been a “hard start to the season” but insisted Durham will “battle on”.

Resuming on 158-3, Collingwood and Graham Clark shared a 102-run partnership before the latter fell for a career-best 75.

Ryan Pringle added a further 81, before three wickets fell for 26 runs as Durham declared on 276-7.

Glamorgan started tentatively with Jacques Rudolph and a promoted Andrew Salter going cheaply.

Aneurin Donald blitzed six fours to score 28 off 17 balls, while David Lloyd could only add three.

Selman, still there, and Ingram put on 73 in overs, before the latter, who made 42 from 31 balls, was caught behind off Pringle.

Chris Cooke kept Glamorgan alive by striking both spinners for six but fell to Coughlin, with Will Bragg following soon after.

But with 14 needed from the last over, Selman drove the Durham bowler’s first ball into the sightscreen.

He then put the second over the square leg boundary and pushed the third for two to win the game. NEWCASTLE Falcons flanker Mark Wilson has been named in England’s squad for their two-test tour to Argentina.

The Cumbrian shone from the bench in Sunday’s 28-14 win over the Barbarians, and has earned his place on the plane for a trip which sees tests against the Pumas on June 10 and 17.

Both games are 8.15pm UK-time kick-offs, and will be shown live on the BBC.

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: “Everyone at the club is delighted that Mark’s form for us is being recognised by the England coaches.

“He has been a credit to the Falcons all season with a consistently high level of performance, and I have every confidence he will show well at the next level.”

The uncapped Wilson (right) was the top tackler in the Aviva Premiership for the third season running in the Opta stats, and was shortlisted for Premiership Player of the Season.

England head coach Eddie Jones said: “I’m really excited about this test series in Argentina. It is a big opportunity for this group and we are going out there to win 2-0.

“The players who have been in camp over the last few weeks have done extremely well and the win against a Barbarians team full of top internationals yesterday is testament to the hard work they have put in.

“We are looking forward to a good week of preparation in London before we depart this weekend.”

Uncapped Exeter flanker Don Armand has also been named in the England squad.

Zimbabwe-born 28-year-old Armand was man of the match as the Chiefs edged Wasps after extra time in the Aviva Premiership final at Twickenham on Saturday.

Wilson and Armand come into a 32-man squad that has lost Tom Wood and James Haskell from its provisional selection announced last month.
