Sad start to Brodick Bowling Club season

-

After a showery morning, the afternoon of April 30 saw the opening game of the Brodick Bowling Club season and the weather stayed sunny and mild throughout. A total of 18 players entertained a number of spectators, and a very happy opening game ensued. It was good to have four players from other clubs with us on the day.

The club was saddened just three days later to hear that Tony Wooden, a very enthusiastic and loyal member of the club and who had thrown the first jack on opening day, had died very suddenly. Tony played both indoors and outdoors bowls very successfully, and it was fitting that a number of bowlers from around the island attended his later cremation at Holmsford Bridge.

The club will be only too pleased to welcome anyone wondering about trying out the game of bowls. Every day of the week there are members on hand (weather permitting) to explain the basics of the game – just come along any time from 10.30am to 4.30pm which is when the bowling green and tennis courts are open to the public, or at rink games held at 6.45pm Monday and Wednesdays and 2pm Saturdays. All equipment is provided.

The month’s results were as follows: April 30 John Lauder, Iain Hendry and Ian Davidson (+17); May 2 Andy McCrindle and Ann Hollingworth (+7); May 7 John Robertson, Robert Crawford and Lavinia Hendry (+12); May 9 Charlie Weir and Ann Hollingworth (+18); May 11 Charlie Weir and Lavinia Hendry (+30); May 14 Colin Haggarty, Andy McCrindle and Aileen Latona (+15); May 16 Charlie Weir, Ann Hollingworth and Jim Gourlay (+11); May 18 Charlie Weir and Iain Hendry (+13); May 21 John McConnachie and Ann Hollingworth (+14); May 23 Charlie Weir, Ernie Stanger and Lavinia Hendry (+7); May 25 John McConnachie and Charlie Weir (+20); May 28 Peter Milne, Vicky Milne and Charles Hendry (+15); May 30 Robert Crawford and Geoff Rhodes (+13).
