Who will Boro choose to ke

KIERAN Scott admitted there is an interesting battle set to take place within the Middlesbrough squad in the early stages of the summer, with five goalkeepers battling for three spots in the squad.

Boro have talented academy prospects Sol Brynn and Zach Hemming returning from loan spells this summer and now 23 and 24, they both have plans to try and impress and fight for their place in Michael Carrick’s plans next season.

However, Boro already have Seny Dieng, Tom Glover and Jamie Jones, who all signed for the club last summer.

While Jones is out of contract this summer and hasn’t yet made an appearance, it is hoped the veteran will stay due to being the perfect example of a modern-day third-choice goalkeeper.

Beyond that, the other four will do battle for the other two spots in the Boro squad, with Dieng leading the race to initially retain his number one spot on account of Boro wanting that experience for their promotion charge next term.

Asked about the goalkeeper situation, head of football Scott assessed: “We don’t really know the answer to that until they all come in. Jamie Jones has a part to play because he’s the only genuine number three there. Seny was clearly the number one last season, it’s who is there behind that?

“Sol came back after League One finished and really impressed, he’s built like a wardrobe and his feet are brilliant. So that was a real positive.

“Zach has done brilliantly as well. I’ve watched loads of him up there (in Scotland) and he’s done really well. He’s a great kid, he’s moved his family around on loan.

“The pair of them have both done so well out on loan. That’s the battle. Everyone loves Seny, he’s done really well, and he has that experience.”

Reports towards the end of the season suggested Glover was attracting interest from teams in Scotland and Europe and, keen to play more football to enhance his international prospects, he could leave the mer. That the club to of Brynn who have oped well youth rank
