SCARLETT CROWNED SCHOOLGIRL CHAMP

-

Scarlett Bewick is Wearmouth Boxing Club’s latest national champion.

The 12-year-old won the England Schoolgirls 48kg title in Crawley at the weekend.

In the final, Bewick had to overcome Faye Marshall, boxing out of the Great Wyrley boxing club.

Bewick was able to land some effective combinations during the opener to take the lead .

The second round saw Marshall starting the faster, but Bewick landed some crisp backhands in order to stay firmly ahead.

The third and final round was a keenly-fought battle with both girls throwing plenty of punches, but once again Bewick was able to finish strongly in order to secure a memorable win against her previously-unbeaten opponent.

Coach Stevie Mclane said: “All credit goes to Scarlett as she listened really well, sticking to the tactics and the game plan perfectly.

“In winning the title, Scarlett has become our club’s first ever Schoolgirl champion, so all the coaches couldn’t be any prouder of her.”

The fine championship run for Mason Lodge in the schoolboy championships came to a halt in the semi-finals following a contentious points loss to Elijah Moore.

Meanwhile, Wearmouth ABC staged their final boxing show of the season last Friday at the Roker Hotel .

The trio of Charlie Marshall, Niall Brigham and Max Lambert all had skills contests.

All three boys performed well and are developing towards having contests next season.

Reigning Wearmouth national champion Callum Drinkald took on the talented Jimmy Burnside from Chesterfield in a terrific contest. Drinkald emerged as the winner via a unanimous decision.

Beau Smith versus Declan Nunn of Plains Farm turned out to be another keenlyfought contest between two strong boys.

With both of the boxers enjoying success, it went to the judges’ scorecards and they favoured Smith, who secured a split decision.

Jude Percival took on the MichaEl Wilkinson from Lakeside. Percival started the stronger and forced the referee to deliver a count in the first round to Wilkinson.

After that, Wilkinson recovered and came back into the contest, but Percival was rewarded for the early work he did to win the contest on points.

Harrison Smith took on Roshan Mandle from Jorvik boxing club in York.

Both boxers gave it their all in a good contest. Smith was able to land the cleaner work in securing a welldeserved victory.

Max Dawson boxed the strong Joe Dobbie, also from Lakeside. An all-round good performance from Dawson got him the win and the boxer of the night award.

Topping the bill, Habeeb Owulade took on Andrew Miller of Houghton boxing club.

Owulade took a unanimous decision in a keenlyfought close contest, with the judges preferring the early workrate of Owulade.
