DIXON’S DELIGHT

SOUTH SHIELDS BOWLER PROGRESSES INTO NEXT ROUND OF THE NATIONAL SINGLES

-

There has been some superb performances in the past week in the local sections of the National Singles.

South Shields Phil Dixon had a good 21-9 win at The Parks against Steve Miller to set up an all-Shields affair against Neal Ridley.

Houghton’s Peter Thomson defeated Shields’ Derek Robson 21-7 and will head to West Denton next to face Michael Bennett.

Shaun McIntosh came out on top in an all-Shields affair with Paul Sainthouse 21-8, and will face either Mal Johnston (Gateshead) or club-mate Joe Webster next.

In the south section, Hartlepool’s Vinnie O’Neill beat Redcar’s Tom Entwhistle 216.

However, there was better news for Redcar’s Paul Bostock, who had an impressive 21-5 win at Hartlepool against Albert Ward. In the next round, Bostock will host Hartlepool’s Dale Oram who eased past Redcar’s Denis Gavin 21-3.

An all Hartlepool tie saw Glen Skipp beat Marc Squirrell 21-16.

In the pairs, Stanley’s Ian Peacock beat Gateshead’s Brian Orrell 21-10 and will host Durham’s Jim Hutchinson, who in turn beat West Denton’s David Morrison.

Mathew Raftree (Parks) beat Gateshead’s Mark Smith 27-10 and South Shields Dave Paterson had a good 23-14 win at West Denton against Stephen Bolton.

In the south section, Paul Hartley (Hartlepool) defeated Thornaby’s Stan Crowe 21-10.

In the Triples, Stanley’s Brett Arkley eased past West Denton’s Cecil Swick 26-7 to set up a clash at Durham against Gary Smith.

There should be a repeat clash in the Fours as Arkley had an 18-11 win at Shields against Paul Sainthouse, while Smith should get past West Denton’s James Curtis.

There was more disappointment for Sainthouse in the Two Bowl Singles, losing at home 21-12 to Durham’s Michael Laydon.

In the Over-60s Singles, Stanley’s John Thurlbeck overpowered Durham’s Malcolm Robinson 21-3 and West Denton’s Roy Goldsmith beat Stanley’s Derek Craig 21-6.

Thurlbeck also progressed in the Over-60s Pairs, beating South Shields Bob Cragg 28-6.

In the Mixed Pairs, there will be an all Shields affair as David Bolt tackles Jaxon McKenna in the second round.

Bolt eased past Gateshead’s Tim Mohon 36-2, while McKenna had to grind out a 20-18 win over West Denton’s Herbie Blacklock.

In the south section, Hartlepool’s Paul Mosley defeated Redcar’s Alan Jones 19-15 and will face club mate Paul Hartley in the next round.

In the Mixed Fours, Shaun McIntosh (Shields) won a thriller 14-12 against Durham’s Michael Laydon, while Hartlepool’s Marc Squirrell defeated Redcar’s Alan Jones 15-12.

The only tie in the Family Pairs to have been played saw Durham’s Mark Higgins record a 31-11 win at Gateshead against Tim Mohon.

In the Champion of Champions, Darlington’s Mark Jones defeated Aycliffe’s Dave Quickmire 21-14 and will now face Hartlepool’s Glen Skipp, who ground out a 21-18 win over Thornaby’s Steve Slaughter.

The winner will face Ferryhill’s Alan Hind.

South Shields’ Phil Dixon progressed with a 21-19 win over the Parks Peter Dawson. In the next round, Dixon heads to Stanley next to face Billy Bell, who had a cracking 21-18 win at West Denton against Clive Knott.

This season’s Denny Cup got underway last weekend, and the clash of the round saw Durham and Hartlepool go head-to-head, with the latter looking to avenge a fourshot loss when the teams met last season.

As expected, it was a tight affair with Hartlepool coming out on top 82-72.

Across the venues, Hartlepool won on two of the four rinks, with Marc Squirrell’s eight-shot win over Durham talisman Gary Smith proving the difference.

Stanley will provide the opposition after they cruised to a 97-67 win over Redcar.

A resurgent Gateshead inflicted a 92-55 defeat on West Denton and will face Darlington next, who beat the Parks 79-44, all the losers drop into the Denny Plate.

It’s Egham Trophy time tomorrow with four ties taking place.

Houghton’s record in recent years has been poor, having not progressed past the first round in the last five years.

West Denton provide the opposition with the sides having met twice in the last five years, which Denton have comfortably won on each occasion.

The following Houghton squad will be looking to end the run of defeats, the action starts at 10am.

Last season, South Shields reached the last 16 only to miss out against Hartlepool, but this season, Shields tackle a Stanley outfit who have only recently returned to the Egham competition.

Although they have lost twice in the first round in their two attempts, the following Shields squad has been selected for a 10am start.

Houghton face Ferryhill in the first round of the Over60s Double Fours, a mixture of youth and experience will take to the green on Tuesday, November 6, with a 10.30am start.

It has been confirmed that the Durham County’s Seniors Over 60s’ Liberty tie against Lincolnshire will take place at York on Monday, November 19, this is due to the 100 mile rule.

The Norfolk based Potters Leisure Resort is not only renown as the home of the indoor World Championships, but also a popular destination for bowling touring parties.

One such group from Seaham, Houghton and Sunderland made the trip.

During each week the resort holds a Knockout Fours event and the local quartet of Tony Grimes, Elizabeth Morris, T.McLaren and Kevin Morris battled through 100 entries to finish runners up.
