STEPHENSON SPOT ON IN LAKESIDE CUP WIN

The Durham County Sunday Cup took centre stage at the weekend as the region’s clubs looked to progress.

A tight affir between rivals AFC Houghton and Lakeside SSC went all the way after the sides couldn’t be separated.

After 90 minutes, the game ended 2-2. Lakeside scored through Barrass and Anth Gamble and Houghton got back into it through strikes from Morrison and super sub Konnor Wells, but Lakeside relied on Paul Stephenson to notch the winning penalty in the shoot-out.

Keiron Davies scored two and set Ryhope up for the win. Dale Spence, Gav Nesbitt and Sean Bage added to Davies’ earlier strikes.

Millview bowed out of the early stages of the competitio­n after going down 5-0 to the hands of Coundon Miners Arms. Hagan earned the man of the match award for Millview.

Dean Machin stepped off the bench to notch for Ryhope FC but it was only a consolatio­n as they were beaten well by Ferryhill. It finished 5-1 and Ryhope had Mark Wasey given his marching orders.

The Lansdowne sailed into the next round with a simple 4-0 win over Hartlepool Pot House. Bryan Norton bagged a brace, Lewis Lynch slotted home after a fine move and then Luke Richardson also found the net.

Myers look to have turned a corner after their decent 5-1 win over Hilda Park in the county cup. Local superstar Jonny Evans is enjoyed his latest stint with Myers as he hit the net twice to cancel out an early goal from the away team.

Michael Smith, Andy Smith and a Steven Thompson effort rounded up the scoring for Myers.

Wear United’s excellent form was brought to a halt as they went down 2-1 to Newton Aycliffe. The reliable Sam Wade increasing his goals tally for the season but United couldn’t find any more goals as they bowed out.

Oddies were missing their superstar Richie Timm and it showed as they went down 2-1 to Peterlee The Hearts. Bryan Wood hit Oddies’ only strike.

Kings Arms were beaten 4-2 on spot kicks after their game against Seaton Carew U19s finished goalless.

It was a poor day at the office for Thorney Close Inn as they were dumped out of the county cup in a 5-1 defeat by Sherburn. Ross Antliff scored their consolatio­n.

Sam Robinson was on hand to find the net for Park View but his side couldn’t take anything from the game as Shotton Comrades finished strong 4-1 winners.

Fourth Division superstars Carpet Centre Elite embarrasse­d Premier League Redhouse Orders in a tight 4-3 win.

It took a late strike for the Carpetmen to take the win and it was David Fairs who got the winner.

The home side had Robins, Oxley and Taylor on target while Redhouse kept themselves interested with goals from Morse, Stokoe and Chip Bulmer.

A Lewis Herron treble got Herrington CW on their way to an easy 6-1 win over a struggling Washington Athletic side.

Anth Cooper scored Athletic’s only effort but Herrington added to Herron’s hat-trick through Glendennin­g scoring twice and a Ridley header.

Ryhope CW shocked First Division outfit Wearmouth CW to advance into the next round of the cup. It finished 3-3 after 90 minutes and Ryhope needed penalties to see off Wearmouth.

Ryhope had Mitchison, Moan and Doran on target while Robbie Robson hit a brace for Wearmouth and Reynolds made it three, but Ryhope advanced after winning 4-2 courtesy of the spot kicks.

The Stackyard’s winning streak continued after they made light work of their Hartlepool Snooker Club counterpar­ts with a 6-0 win.

Jake McDermott is on fire and he smashed home a fine hat-trick, the excellent Brad Wilson scored a beauty then Fairley and Dan Ross also scored.

Elsewhere, The Board Inn advanced to the next round of the Billy Pemberton Memorial Cup with a 4-1 win over Millfield Free Gardeners.

Brooke, Pearson, Burlinson and Steven Trotter all scored in the win, with Todd Kershaw replying.
