FUNDRAISER TEES OFF
Golfers hit the fairways despite dreadful weather to help worthy causes on Wearside.
George Washington Hotel and Golf Club in Washington was the venue for the Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Lynda Scanlan’s charity gold event.
This year the annual charity golf day also included the Civic “At Home” for the Mayoral Consort, former Sunderland midfielder Micky Horswill, with guests from South Tyneside, Gateshead and Bishop Auckland local authorities among those attending.
Registration in the morning was followed by a day of competitions, a break for lunch, and presentations.
Those taking part had the chance to play alongside Micky, who was part of the Black Cats team which won the FA Cup in 1973.
A car donated by local dealership Lookers Nissan was the prize for the “Hole in One” competition, with luxury hampers and golf equipment among the prizes for the other winning golf teams and individuals.
The Mayoral Charities this year are the Sunderland and County Durham Royal Society for the Blind, young people’s charity Hope Spring, and the NSPCC Childline Service in Sunderland.
Coun Scanlan said: “I’d like to thank everybody who worked so hard to support our annual charity golf day and the Consort’s civic At Home event, and all our guests for coming along to help us make today such a success.
“It was great to see so many people join us, my congratulations to all the winning golfers, but also those who braved the weather.
“What helped us make this possible was the generosity of our hosts, sponsors, and all those who donated prizes and their time to help with our fundraising.
“Everything we’ve raised here will go towards my Mayoral charities, who all work so hard to make a difference.”
