HUBBY, 89, DIES TRYING TO SAVE WIFE FROM FIRE

- By John Siddle by Amy Sharpe

A Great-grandad died as he tried to rescue his disabled wife from a fire. Malcolm and Margaret Nokes were together till the last in the rented home they had been living in since they got married nearly 60 years ago. Margaret, 86, who was deaf and struggled to walk, was found in a lounge armchair.

Malcolm, 89, lay dead at her feet. Neighbours tried to help but the couple died of smoke inhalation.

An inquest heard an electrical fault probably sparked the April 5 blaze in a cupboard under the stairs used to store newspapers in the semi-detached house in Kirby Muxloe, Leics. Leicester assistant coroner Lydia Brown said: “Malcolm was attempting to raise the alarm and assist his wife when he died.

“Despite the undoubtedly heroic efforts by the fire crews that night, nothing could be done.”

Verdict: Accidental death.

DISNEY has warned viewers of its new TV streaming service that many of its classic films could be racist.

A disclaimer alerts subscribers when they watch old cartoons featuring racial stereotypes.

It reads: “This program is presented as originally created. It may contain outdated cultural depictions.”

They include two ‘Asian’ cats with large teeth who sing a song called We Are Siamese in The Lady and the Tramp in 1955. And 1941 movie Dumbo has been criticised for having wise-cracking crows with Afroamerican accents voiced by a white actor.

The warning also appears on The Jungle Book from 1976, and The Aristocats from 1970. But 1946’s Song of the South – which features the hit Zipa-dee-doo-dah and has been criticised for its portrayal of Afroamericans – is not shown.

Disney+ started in the US last month and launches in the UK on March 31.

Entertainment site IGN said: “Disney has been keeping a close eye on its content now that it is presenting it on a single streaming platform to a 2019 audience.”
