Wayne’s last hurrah is just Roo-diculous
THE net worth to the English football team of Wayne Rooney’s return is nil.
The net worth to Wayne Rooney and his marketing team by proving he has some relevance in England will be measured in thousands of dollars.
OK, he’s had no grand farewell. But there was a huge fanfare that accompanied his fantastic achievement of becoming England’s greatest goalscorer. Rightly so, too.
But where is the small-print that everyone needs a big send-off? I didn’t see anyone glorying in a last hurrah for Ashley Cole (below). A pedigree performer who clocked up more than a century of caps. He never scored a goal for his country, which I think is a shame.
But if we are going to do it for Rooney, why not celebrate the most capped left-back ever to wear the Three Lions shirt. It’s just ridiculous. What was wrong with simply saying ‘No’ to Rooney’s public relations’ team?
This is England, we’re talking about – our national team – not some convenient bolt-on to Roo’s moneymaking empire.
His Three Lions career has gone. He can be proud of it. He was an excellent footballer, just short of world-class.
But it’s over – finito. Shame and all that but tempus fugit – as they say in my local.
If Rooney wants to say goodbye, he can have a pitch presentation.
After all, it’s far more recognition than the late Bobby Moore received.
