Rangers ‘wrong in the head’

- By Gordon Waddell

good. People forget that while we can be excellent, others can be too – there can be six contenders.

“This season we don’t know, we will see. The important thing is to be there, and to be ourselves. It’s not winning back-to-back, it’s to be ourselves.

“Of course there are new managers. Maurizio Sarri, Unai Emery want to be able to dream.

“It’s a new challenge. That’s why we stay here. The moment I am not hungry I am leaving, the moment the players are not hungry any more they are going to move on. That’s the point.

“Forget how much Liverpool have spent because they may have spent a lot, but last season they were a good team as well.

“Maybe Tottenham could not spend because of the stadium – but there is Chelsea with Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante in the middle and Hazard, Willian, Pedro and Morata up front.

“So you cannot say they are not contenders to win. Or Manchester United. People ask how will they do, but I know a little bit about the manager and in that situation how good they handle that.

“Arsenal are contenders for titles too. Yes, they can do it. I know the manager and I don’t think he needs advice from me.

“He is a smart, intelligent, wellprepared manager so he will know exactly what he has to do. I have a lot of respect for Unai Emery.” STEVEN GERRARD claims Rangers ran up their worst home record in more than a century last season because they were mentally weak. And he insists it won’t happen again on his watch. Bossed through a disastrous campaign by Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty, they lost seven league games at Ibrox in a season for the first time since 1915, winning only 10 of their 19 at home and dropping 25 points. Now Gerrard wants a return to the days of the Govan stronghold being a feared fortress as they start their Premiership home run against St Mirren today. He said: “It’s not good enough for a team like Rangers. You can’t be dropping that amount of points at home. “If the mentality’s not right or your squad or your team’s not strong enough, it’s possible these things can happen. A lot of the games where Rangers dropped points last season, it was down to mentality. “We’ve made it clear that it’s not acceptable – we’re not good enough where we can become complacent.”
