Davies hails young ones

-

“The players were excellent, they really were.”

Barnsley boss Danny Wilson said: “We’ve not got to the second ball for the first goal and they are the fine details that make that big difference.

“Alli’s goal was a bit of a scuff, but it creeps in and that’s the game-changing moment – and it’s disappointing.

“MK Dons showed their class, but before 2-0 they themselves were getting very frustrated – I wish we could have been 2-0 up and popping the ball around like that.

“But they did play well and they’re a very good side who have been together for a number of years now.” STEVE DAVIES heaped praise on youngsters James Baillie and James Jones following Crewe’s derby victory.

Baillie and Jones, both 18, produced performances beyond their tender years, especially when Vale applied the pressure during the latter stages.

Nicky Ajose netted Crewe’s winner in the 39th minute after earlier missing a penalty.

Crewe boss Davis said: “They are two lads who have come through our system and it is special when you see homegrown talent perform like that.

“I’ve given them both a big hug in the dressing room. They haven’t played in a local derby and the temperament they showed was outstanding.

Brave

“We had to survive a lot of pressure towards the end and the Vale fans were really getting behind their team, but all of our lads were brave and threw their bodies on the line.”

Vale boss Rob Page added: “We are all bitterly disappointed. We created enough chances to get a point, but that shouldn’t be what we are talking about. We started brightly, but failed to take advantage of that and Crewe came back into it.

“The penalty miss got us out of jail, but then we’ve conceded a soft goal after that. I was confident the substitutions would allow us to create chances and that is what happened.

“We’ve got to give Crewe credit because they defended well.”
