DRIVER FORCED OFF ROAD & SHOT DEAD
run is on Friday in the heats of the 4x100 metres relay – is a welcome boost to a competition, which is missing high-profile athletes Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill.
Meanwhile England’s Zoe Smith, 20, overcame Welsh veteran Michaela Breeze to take gold in the 58kg weightlifting… and celebrated with a backflip.
Alistair Brownlee, 26, and brother Jonny, 24, helped England secure gold in the first-ever mixed relay triathlon. A MOTORIST has been forced off a remote country road and gunned down in what police fear was a gangland-style hit.
Two men were being quizzed on suspicion of murder last night after the victim, in his early 20s, was found slumped in his car.
Detectives think more than one gunman was behind the attack near Rugby, Warwickshire, at 11.40am on Friday.
They are interested in tracing a silver hatchback seen speeding from the area and said although they are keeping an open mind, the killing is most likely a “targeted incident”.
Locals described the scene of the shooting as “very remote” with no buildings nearby. The victim’s car was discovered by a member of the public.
Superintendent Adrian McGee, who is leading the investigation, said: “We need to hear from anyone who may have information to help us with enquiries.
“We are particularly keen to hear from passengers travelling on the X44 bus service from Hinckley to Rugby yesterday through Newton village who may have seen a silver hatchback travelling at speed.
“We previously had reports that two vehicles were seen driving away from the scene.
“The driver of a red car has now contacted police.
“However, we are still interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen a silver car in the locality of this incident.”
Supt McGee believes there is no further threat to residents given the likelihood of the killing being an assassination – but patrols will be ramped up as the probe develops.
He said: “I would like to reassure the local community that we believe this to be a targeted incident.
“However, increased patrols and house to house enquiries will continue today in the Newton village area.”
The victim has yet to be formally identified. The two men being grilled are both in their 30s and a third man has been released without charge.
