Ex-factor on show again

MATT TAYLOR is brimming with pride after he guided Exeter to a club record of 14 league games unbeaten.

Matt Jay and Jevani Brown did the damage to make it 18 matches unbeaten in all competitions – the best in English football.

The Grecians also boast the longest unbeaten run on home soil, having gone 14 games without defeat.

Taylor beamed: “It is fantastic to break the club record and the credit must go to the players.

“We have been tough to beat and started putting wins on the board. I am really proud of them because it is not every day you rewrite history.

Records are there to be broken and there is no reason why we can’t keep it going.”

Despite loitering in the relegation zone, Oldham raced out of the traps.

Jamie Bowden’s nearpost flick tested the reflexes of Cameron Dawson and Benny Couto drilled narrowly wide.

But Oldham were left to count the cost of missed chances as the hosts struck in the 17th minute.

Josh Key darted down the right and crossed for Jay, who took a touch before planting the ball into the far corner with an accomplished finish.

It was the striker’s 10th league goal of the season and his sixth in six games.

Couto was left red-faced in the 50th minute. The wing-back made a hash of clearing Jake Caprice’s cross and Brown tapped in from close range for his first Exeter goal.

Brown missed a chance to add a third – firing wide after profiting from Jordan Clarke’s botched back-pass with the keeper to beat – and the Latics pulled one back in the 84th minute with Bowden’s 25-yarder.

Sam Nombe wasted a glorious chance to seal it in the 90th minute but Exeter held on to move into the automatic promotion places.

Oldham, however, are level on points with rockbottom Scunthorpe after one win in their last seven.

Latics boss Keith Curle moaned: “We made two errors that are game changers. We are where we are because we are making silly mistakes.

“We need to get more players in the box and have the desire to run in behind.”
