Roo: I am no quitter

-

WAYNE ROONEY insisted last night that he will NOT walk away from the boss’s job at crisis club Derby.

He was kept in the dark over the decision to put the club into administration

and only found out when he switched on his TV on Friday night.

Derby could be docked a mammoth 39 points over the next two seasons – a 12-point deduction upon officially appointing an administrator and then a further nine-point penalty for a separate breach of the EFL’s financial regulations.

Other penalties could follow, but 35-year-old Rooney vowed not to quit.

He said: “I’m committed to this club, to the group of players, to the staff – I care for them. We’ll get through this for the better.”

Rooney was as stunned as the fans when he found out owner and chairman Mel Morris’ plans.

England’s record goalscorer, who helped Derby to a 2-1 win over Stoke yesterday, added: “You can see the squad this morning was a bit flat because the players had no information, they’ve seen it on Sky as well.

“Today was a game where I wasn’t really that interested in the result, more the players showing character and showing the fans they care.

“I was thinking how am I going to address the players and more importantly the staff? I’ve seen it at other clubs. Staff members will lose jobs, mortgages to pay. It’s heart breaking really.”

Rooney revealed he has not spoken to the owner either and wants answers.

He added: “It’s not ideal, still no contact with Mel. It has been difficult for me to sit in front of you to address the fans. I don’t know how many points we will be deducted, but my job is to rebuild and restore pride.”
