SCOTT HAILS FAIRYTALE START

-

Scott McDonald made “a fairytale start” for Partick Thistle in his shock return to football with the crucial second goal 10 minutes from time to sink Alloa.

Signed only yesterday and out of the game since leaving Dundee United last May, the 35-year-old striker came off the bench to score.

He snapped up Lewis Mansell’s knockdown to steer a shot past Neil Parry to take Thistle up to eighth.

“It was amazing but it’s not about me it’s about helping Partick Thistle,” said McDonald. “The boys have been excellent with me since I came in and it’s a fairytale start.

“I’m just delighted I could help

the team earn three vital points for us and hopefully it’s onwards and upwards. I’m delighted to be back. It’s taken a while to want to be back and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We can’t look to far forward. Anyone can beat anyone in this league and the gap has closed to the top four. First and foremost, we just need to keep winning games.”

Thistle were ahead in just four minutes when Aidan Fitzpatrick played the ball back into the box.

Kris Doolan laid it back for Blair Spittal who smashed a left-foot shot past Parry. But they were not comfortable until McDonald came on for his debut in 65 minutes and doubled the advantage.

That’s four defeats in a row for Alloa who are now bottom. Boss Jim Goodwin said: “The game plan goes completely out the window after three minutes. You are chasing the game.

“For whatever reason we are giving sloppy goals away. Our defending at times has been so poor and it puts us on the back foot.

“It was a very frustrating afternoon.”
