LAW AND DISORDER

Colly to appeal costly red card

-

Gutted Ayr boss Ian McCall has vowed to appeal the red card that blew the title race wide open.

United were forced to play for an hour with 10 men af ter top scorer Lawrence Shankland was sent off for an elbow on Morgyn Neill.

And they paid the price when former Ayr man Scott Agnew thumped home a spot-kick winner five minutes from time.

It leaves McCall’s men just two points head of Raith at the summit.

And with the Honest Men not in action again until next Sunday, they could be playing catch up when they take to the pitch at Alloa.

McCall said: “Having watched it back, I don’t think it was a red so we will definitely appeal.

“There was no malice in the challenge and it’s clear that Lawrence did not swing his elbow so hopefully it can be rescinded to a yellow.

“The important thing I have stressed to the players is this is still in our hands. We have to go out and win at Alloa – it’s as simple as that.”

Ayr started the day dreaming of a potential title party if results had gone their way but fell behind in three minutes.

Grant Anderson rose to head home Kyle Turner’s cross from the left, silencing a bumper 2323 crowd at Somerset.

But their response was impressive and Jamie Adams rose to bullet in an Alan Forrest corner in 16 minutes.

The major flashpoint came in 32 minutes as Shankland rose for a high ball with Neill. He was dismissed to the boos of the home fans.

Ayr still tried to get forward in the second half but they were caught on the break late on as Turner wriggled clear and tumbled under an Adams challenge. Agnew made no mistake from the spot.

Stranraer boss Stevie Farrell said: “We knew we could get a win. We’ve beaten every team in this league and what these players have achieved is as good as anyone.”
