Chris sub plot foiled by foul up

-

Alan Archibald stood by his decision to bench in-form Chris Erskine as he cursed the second-half clanger that scuppered his masterplan seconds before his talisman came on.

Erskine has been Thistle’s star man this season weighing in with four goals in six games – including yesterday’s 90th-minute stunner that gave the Jags a ray of hope of salvaging a draw.

But Archibald insisted the hitman’s introduction wasn’t too little too late as he explained why his plan was working – right up until a dreadful error by Liam Lindsay that handed Dons their second goal on a plate.

Archibald said: “Chris was changed and ready to go on at 1- 0 then we gave away a bad goal.

“I thought the game would open up and Chris would get the space so the game plan was always to put him on to make a difference.

“I would do it again because the team comes first. It’s not about Chris Erskine, he has a part to play and understands that.

“It was a terrible error by Liam. He had a couple last year and I’ve spoken to him about it. He has to eradicate that from his game because otherwise he was very good. He marshalled the back line and generally he and Danny Devine were comfortable.

“We’re disappointed with the goals. I thought we started well and our game plan was working – but we didn’t take our chances.”

Archibald also vowed to punish Sean Welsh for earning a stupid red card for dissent. He said: “Sean will be fined. It doesn’t matter how frustrated he is because he’s let the team down.”
