Bonfire Night is back on in Crieff.
Preparations for the annual fireworks display in the Strath capital looked to have been thrown into jeopardy last week when objections were received about a proposed shift in venue from the event’s traditional home in Market Park to Braidhaugh.
Crieff Round Table, which organises Bonfire Night, revealed a provisionallyapproved application to stage the fireworks at the home of Crieff and Strathearn Rugby Club had been rescinded.
And, with Market Park no longer an option due to the close proximity of the new B&M store, it looked like residents would be denied a safe and spectacular show for the second year running after it was called off last year due to pandemic-related restrictions.
However, Morrison’s Academy has stepped in and offered Crieff Round Table the use of its playing fields at Dallerie.
The event is the second largest of its type in Perth and Kinross after Perth’s pyrotechnic display, which has been cancelled this year.
The Braidhaugh knock-back came as a big blow to members of Crieff Round Table as the annual community fireworks display is their biggest fundraiser, as well as an opportunity to attract new members to the group.
There were also fears that not having an organised display in the Strath would lead to a return of random smaller fireworks displays in the area, which could put a strain on emergency services and be troublesome for livestock and pets.
This year, Crieff Round Table will be sending fireworks skyward with more than half the decibel levels of previous years.
Tabler Barrie Chiverton is pleased the group’s November 5 celebrations are back on track.
He praised Morrison’s for showing “amazing community spirit”.
Mr Chiverton commented: “Thankfully Morrison’s Academy approached our team as soon as they heard of our struggles and have offered their grounds as a replacement for Market Park.
“On Saturday, November 5, the gates at the Turretbank Road end will be open from 6.30pm. The bonfire will be lit at 7pm and the fireworks will start at 7.30pm.
“The fireworks will be low- noise and Gourlays will be providing hot food and refreshments.”
Meanwhile, discussions have been proceeding, with Perth and Kinross Council, which is now supporting the move to Braidhaugh.
Mr Chiverton added: “It is good to know the location is acceptable for future public events.”
Morrison’s Academy rector Andrew McGarva said the school was delighted to be able to offer its sports fields as a possible venue.
He told the Herald: “When it came to our attention that Crieff Round Table was struggling to find a suitable venue we contacted them to propose our sports fields at Dallerie.
“After all of the cancellations of events as a result of Covid, we’re delighted that we could be of service to the community and help the Crieff Round Table deliver an event that is loved by all. We look forward to welcoming the families of Crieff and beyond on November 5.”
Crieff Round Table relies on donations to put on its events and a donation of £2.50 has been suggested.
