Avro youngsters’ Junior Sixes win

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

THE Junior Sixes League involving Avro, Heaton Moor, Mottram Hall and Styal Golf Clubs resumed action during the summer months organised by Matthew Turnock the pro at Mottram Hall.

All teams hosted two events and Matthew said: Congratulations to all of the teams for their keen participation and it was a successful season for all four clubs and great way for young players to get into golf.”

The league champions were Avro and the league stats were Fixture points – 1 Avro 734, 2 Mottram Hall 804, Heaton Moor 689 and Styal 764.

The final league points were 1 Avro 24.00, 2 Mottram Hall 19.00, 3 Heaton Moor 15.00 and 4 Styal 10.00.

A Sunday Stableford at Avro was won by Leslie Fowler with 38=9, two more than Ian Hallworth and Peter Roles.

The familiar name of Stephen Callaghan was top of the leaderboard in a midweek Stableford at Avro as he led in with 37 from Gordon Featherston 35 and Chris Robinson 34.

It was a close contest at Disley in a Winter League BB Stableford with G Schofield and D Goodwin winning a cpo on 48 from Neil O’Brien and C Nesbitt closely followed by Steve Kewley and P Hughes 47 and J Clamp and Phil Leadbetter 46.

A singles Stableford for Disley ladies was won by Lesley Mott with 31, two more than Linda McCay and Ann McCormick.

Anthony Finch was out on his own in a Stableford at Gatley with 40 from Chris Whitehead 27 and Graham Stubbs and Brett Seery, both 34.

The nerves were on edge at Heaton Moor in the Fourth Round of the Stableford Cup as Joseph Healey led in with 39 and winning a cpo on 37 was Anthony Stennett from John Booth, Sam Jones, Simon Eaton, Clive Harrison and Anthony Thorburn.

A Stableford at New Mills had division one led in by Tony Jennison with 36 from Nick Lewis and

Phil Ardern, both 35.

In division two Robert Holden was top of the shop with 38 from Daniel Moore 36, Lesley Cooper 35 and Duncan Moore and Joel Wood, both 34.

Romiley’s men enjoyed a Four Man Texas Scramble and it was led in by the fab four of R Hutton, D Hirst and R and C Hitchen with 44.0 from S and C Tipping, E Simmonds and G Dixon 45.0 and I Fielden, N Collins, J Knott and M Gahan 48.0.

A Team Waltz at Romiley saw the quartet of M Clarke, W Whittaker, P Wagstaff and A Rate catch the judges eyes with a return of 63 taking them one clear of G Williams, G Roberts, D Ogden and T McGlinchey.

Manchester Alliance Captain Chris ‘Climatic’ Lee (Mellor and Townscliffe) kept up his great track record of dry weather for Alliance competitions to give a full field the chance to enjoy a Two Tee start and a Styal course that was in superb condition along with the usual excellent clubhouse hospitality.

The Styal course is now over 25 years old and grows in maturity and definition every year and it drew unanimous praise for the superb greens.

Team competitions are always popular and played in great spirit and it needed a cpo on 89 points to see the team led by Tom Clancy (Cheadle) featuring Mick Holmes (Cheadle), Alistair Holloway (Denton) and Anthony Kenny (Prestwich) finish ahead of serial winner Haydn McCullen (Ashton-onMersey) and his club colleagues Josh Corrigan, Steve Conway and Graham Hegg – possibly missing out his regular partner Mark Gauci cost Haydn the top spot!

Next in on 88 were the Bury fab four of Chris Bibby, John Caveney, Martin Hill and Ian Marsh who won a cpo form Bob Barrow’s Flixton team.

Haydn McCullen kept up his fantastic winning streak finishing top of the individual pro section with 39 ahead of Phil Archer (Poulton Park) 38 and Jamie Howarth (Davenport) and Scott

Jackson (Disley), both 37.

The weekly prize for the nearest the pin on the fourth hole , provided each week by the ever generous Paul Crisp, was won by Barry Jackson (Davyhulme Park) and sponsor Don Milligan also sponsored a food hamper for nearest the pin on the 14th which was won by Anton Johnson (Warrington).

Well done to all at Styal and the Alliance organisers for providing another excellent day enjoyed by all.
