Group of residents pin down burglary suspect

RESIDENTS angry at a large increase in burglary pinned down a suspect and held him until police arrived.

Officers were called to Beech Avenue, in Gatley, on Tuesday, December 20 at around 2pm to reports of a break-in.

They discovered a group of residents who had already searched the area and had detained a man.

It was one of three arrests Stockport officers have made in as many days as they attempt to crackdown on the worrying ‘major trend’ of burglary.

Between December 1 and 19 there were 252 domestic burglaries in Stockport with a large number seeing high powered cars stolen.

Officers also made an arrest following a car chase through Heaton Norris in the early hours on Thursday, December 22.

A BMW, that is believed to have been stolen, was pursued on Belmont Way before it crashed near the junction with Wellington Road North.

Two people were seen Road incident.

Matthew James Gradwell, 30, of Maismore Road, Wythenshaw­e, went before Stockport magistrate­s charged with attempted burglary and two counts of handling stolen goods.

He entered no please and was remanded in custody to appear at Minshull Street Crown Court on January 19.

In the meantime there have been further burglaries.

Two watches were stolen from a home on Park Road, Romiley, on Tuesday, December 20 between 4pm and 5pm. A kitchen window had been forced.

And on the same day between 6.40am and 5.15pm a back patio window was smashed in a burglary at Strines Road, Marple.
