George jumps on his bike to help disadvantaged kids

-

A 10-YEAR-OLD schoolboy has cycled the breadth of the country to help children less fortunate than himself.

George Hales, from Bramhall, has managed to complete the 170-mile Way of the Roses challenge.

He rode his bike coast-to-coast from Morecambe to Bridlington and raised £8,300 for his efforts.

He decided to take on the mammoth challenge after being inspired by last year’s Children in Need.

The money he raised will be used to buy bicycles, helmets and equipment as part of Key103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas appeal.

George’s proud dad Jason said: “George was so moved by the plight of other youngsters while watching last year’s Children In Need that he asked if he could do something to help.

“Since then, George has saved all his pocket money, birthday and Christmas money to buy himself a bike and equipment for the challenge and he has gained massive support from family, friends, fellow pupils and teachers.

“His headteacher, Mr Wheeler, has been really supportive and helped to promote the ride in the school newsletter, and we’re all extremely proud to see how committed he has been to this cause.”

Jason joined George for the ride and other friends and family also took part on some of the route.

George added: “I found the ride tough in places, especially the first two days as it was quite hilly.

“My favourite parts of the ride were with my grandad, our family friend Dave and my little sister Ella on the third and fourth day.

“I am really pleased that so many people helped to achieve my goal, but I was even more surprised we raised over £8,000. It makes me happy that so children will get a nice bike for Christmas.”
