JONATHAN Coverley was one of the most successful golfers at Mellor and Townscliff­e in 2014, winning several top ‘major’ trophies.

It looks like his family will have to order more silver polish in 2015 as Jonathan got the new season off to a flying start in a singles Stableford competitio­n.

Playing off seven handicap in very testing weather conditions Jonathan posted a superb score of 43 points to finish five clear of Jay Bebbington and Mike Priestley in division one.

Topping the other division was Nick Challinor with 40 points ahead of Anthony Wicks 37 and Terence Bebbington 36.

Marple’s men played for the Seniors Charity Cup and in division one Keith Nadin won a tight contest taking a cpo on 70 from John Mills and club legend Sid Hodkinson.

It was plain sailing for Chris Ernill in division two was his 68 left him three shots clear of Chris Osborne.

Marple ladies were in medal mode and June Irwin was first past the post with 75 from Linda Rogers 77.

Reddish Vale seniors played the first round of the Joey Jones Cup and David Edwards set the early pace with 41 points from Neil Crewdson 40 with the rest of the pack trailing back by seven strokes.

Wednesday Stableford action at Vale had the divisions led in by Craig Davies 38 points, Graham Withnall 36 and Patrick Weadick 37.

Sheila Cowlard led in a singles Stableford for Vale’s ladies with 39 points from Linda Warburton 36 and Jeanette Kinder 33.

Romiley’s men played round one of the Wednesday Handicap Cup and S Denton was out on his own with 66, three less than Dave Bakewell, P Drinkwater and Craig Oakes who had the lowest gross of 75.

Gill Walker won a medal for Romiley ladies with her fine haul of 41 points taking her well clear of Angela Wheeler and Marcia Conway, both 37.

Houldswort­h’s men played a Stableford for the Seniors Championsh­ip and subsidiary and it was won by David Michael with 38 points, one more than Steven Richardson with Gary Brine, Barry McConnell and Tom Cook all going
