DRYMEN LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

The next meeting of Drymen & District Local History Society will take place on Thursday March 24 at 7.45pm in Drymen Village Hall. Carol Primrose will give an illustrate­d talk on Coal mining in Scotland and the Cadder pit disaster of 1913. Coal mining was a dirty and dangerous job with always the danger of roof falls, gas and flooding. Cadder 15 mine at Bishopbrig­gs suffered a disaster in 1913, when 22 men were killed. New memorials to the victims were erected on the centenary of the disaster. Visitors welcome, £2 entrance fee,

DRYMEN AND DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATIO­N

The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 15 at 2pm in the village hall when the folks from The Hub G63 are coming along to help us to find out what they do and the wee things we can change to help do our bit for our environmen­t. If you’re over 60 and would like to join us we’d be delighted to welcome you. We will still be taking precaution­s against Covid and sitting a maximum of three households per group. Please only come if you are symptom free, test before you come if possible, wear a mask, and observe social distancing.

KILLEARN KIRK

On Sunday, March 13, the Rev Stuart Sharp will lead the service at 10.30am taking on into Lent with The Pharisees continuing to challenge Jesus’ authority in meeting with tax collectors and others while encouragin­g them to follow him. Although Covid restrictio­ns are being relaxed, hand sanitising, recording your presence and wearing face coverings are all still required.

SPRING CONCERT

Strathendr­ick Singers will be performing their Spring Concert, featuring music from the Baltic region, on Sunday, March 20 in Killearn Kirk at 7pm. Tickets £12 adults, £3 children, £25 family ticket. Available from choir members, on the door or by emailing secretary@strathendr­icksingers.org.uk. The concert features music from Norway and the Baltic regions. It is dedicated to the people of Ukraine, and proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Ukrainian charities.

KIPPEN CHURCH

It is planned that Rev Ellen Larson Davidson will lead the service in Kippen Church this Sunday, March 13, at 11.15am. Please take a lateral flow test before attending church. It will be necessary to wear a mask during the service, to use hand sanitiser on entry and exit and to leave contact details.

Updates of interest can always be found on Facebook ‘Kippen and Norrieston Parish Churches of Scotland.’ Access also via Google. In accordance with Church of Scotland advice, in the meantime the church will be closed and alarmed every day, including weekends.

BIBLE STUDY

A Lenten study using ‘Not A Tame Lion’ by Hilary Brand, looking at the writings of CS Lewis and movies based on his books and life, will be held on Wednesday mornings at 10am. Ellen has a few copies of the study book and the DVDs of Shadowland­s and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe if anyone is interested. LENTEN WALKS

The second of the Lenten Walks will be in Gartmore, meeting at Gartmore Church for 10am tomorrow (Saturday). Coffee/tea and wrapped biscuits will be provided at the end of the walk. For the walk on March 19 look out for the posters which will show the location of the meeting place.

USED STAMPS

Diana McCall, Firbank, Cauldhame, 01786 870546, still collects used stamps to fund the Assistance Dogs Charity to train puppies to help disabled people. Please leave a margin of paper around the stamps and hand them to Diana or leave them in McNicoll’s Stores.

RUSKIE WI

On Internatio­nal Women’s Day, Anne Artis kicked off the first face to face meeting in almost two years welcoming members and guests. It was agreed that the funds from the raffle would be donated to the Red Cross Ukraine Fund. Anne then introduced Alison Younger of Old Leckie Farm. She took us on a journey around her farm on the shaded side of the carse which is focused on agri-tourism – to connect people to the land and also produce food. The farm is situated on the Old Military Road – a historic farm on land which has been managed by people for over 500 years. Leckie Farm was owned by a bodyguard for Mary Queen of Scots and granted the barony and grounds at Leckie until 1648 when they lost the farm in the Reformatio­n to the Moirs who came through the uprisings unscathed and built
