Wave of English nationalism has forced us out EU
Dear Editor, On Friday, I will lose a privilege that I cherish — my citizenship of the European Union.
Scotland too will leave, forced out, in my opinion, by a wave of frustrated English nationalism.
We have been here before. At the time of the lopsided Union of 1707, Fletcher of Saltoun warned Scottish politicians that their Westminster MPs would be a perpetual minority — ‘dancing in a trap for all eternity’ — and the speaker of Commons declared ‘We have caught Scotland by the tail, and will hold her fast’.
Now history repeats itself, as our elected representatives are powerless to stop or evven modify Brexit, and Boris Johnson decrees that we have no right to hold an referendum on our own future.
EU or UK? Opinions differ, but a Scotland without the power to decide is — to borrow a phrase from Jacob Rees Mogg —‘a vassal state’.
John Coutts, Ladysneuk Road, Stirling growing at Bandneath (Stirling Observer 22/01/20), I would like to say what a great idea this is.
I do hope that the local community will support the development, as hopefully the company will employ as many locals as possible?
The Scottish tomato industry died out in 1970s due to lack of the UK government no subsidiaries been provided.
Spain and Holland came in and took over the market.
The benefits would be local produce with a Scottish name on it.
Hopefully we would be able to buy tomatoes locally in shops, farmshops and not just to the main supermarkets.
So locals and Stirling councillors please allow this idea to go ahead.
Rhona Peet, Dunblane with information emanating from the initiative seemingly not filtering down to local level.
There are far too many drugs-related deaths in Scotland for the initiative to remain unco-ordinated and lacking impetus as appears to be the case.
Drugs victims do not have time on their side and as the problem increases, so does the need for urgent action.
There is no room for political gimmicks nor complacency and hopefully efforts to tackle the scourge of drugs abuse will not be sidelined as the SNP drives forward with its independence agenda.
